The 2011 tournament promises to be every bit as exciting to watch as its namesake’s 1945 season. Dallas amateur Jordan Spieth has accepted a sponsor exemption and will play again this year. And Jason Day will return to defend his title.

Byron Nelson’s Legacy

The HP Byron Nelson Championship celebrates the life and legacy of Byron Nelson, who said of the tournament “This tournament is the best thing that’s ever happened to me in golf. Better than winning the Masters or the U.S. Open or eleven in a row. Because it helps people.”

Byron Nelson - great golfer, humanitarian and all around good guy – is known for the greatest single season in the history of the game. His 1945 season is considered the least attainable record not only in golf, but in sports. In fact, he is the player that is most often compared to a machine because of his consistent swing. When the USGA developed a mechanical device for testing golf balls and clubs, they named it “Iron Byron” because its swing was perfect every time, just like Byron Nelson’s.

Mr. Nelson was only the second golfer to receive the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. In addition to his many accolades, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2006.
